Re the learning to drive question from LynandSean - you can get a learners permit at 16 after a theory test and you can take your 'provisonal' test at 17 with at least 50 hours logged experience behind you. On passing that you can drive unaccompanied (but with speed and other restrictions) for 3 years before getting a full licence. My daughter's just gone from learner' permit to provisonal without too much trouble.

BTW it didn't cost us anything to put her on my wife's RAV4 as a learner and when she got the provisional license (and went on as a named driver) the insurance hardly went up at all. We pay $600 for comprehensive cover which is pretty cheap for a policy with a driver of limited experience and we've in Sydney which is just about the most expensive area.
